what hardly any American knows about Holland:
that 1 billion in Holland is a big 1012 not just a small 109 - which is one miljard
so the Sep 2008 US financial bailout is "only" 700 billion dollars, or a 1,000 times less than what I thought....

1,000,000,000 (one billion, short scale) is the natural number following 999,999,999 and preceding 1,000,000,001.
In scientific notation, it is written as 10E9.
In modern (short scale) English language usage, it is usually called a billion
(although in many other languages and long scale usage,
a billion means a million millions, or 1,000,000,000,000, instead of a thousand millions).
In India, it may be known as 100 crores.
The term milliard can also be used to refer to 1,000,000,000,
though this terminology is rarely used in the English language, but often in other languages.

The long and short scales are two different numerical systems used throughout the world:

Short scale is the English translation
of the French term échelle courte.[1]
It refers to a system of numeric names
in which every new term greater than million
is 1,000 times the previous term:
"billion" means "a thousand millions" (109),
"trillion" means "a thousand billions" (1012),
and so on.
