CAUSES AND EFFECT OF UPWELLING: NAMIBIA

Ben Oostdam, 2006 (updated from 1966) page 1

This story clearly demonstrates the interactions between and interdependency of physics and meteorology, marine biology, marine chemistry and marine geology.
(1) In the southern Atlantic Ocean, there is a permanent high pressure area over the middle of the (half) ocean, in contrast with a permanent low overlying the African continent.
(2) The wind will always
start to blow
from HIGH . . . . . . .
to . . . . .
LOW
(3) Due to the rotation of the Earth, the Coriolis Effect will make the wind deviate to the left (in the southern hemisphere) so that the coast of Namibia experiences surface winds from the southwest.
