I strongly disagree with the last sentence in the
above quote of this fascinating NGS article.
Individual Mayflies do not get an opportunity to "pick" a healthy river;
collectively, more will survive if they settle in a healthy substrate,
Therefore, millions will perish, much like oyster larvae ("spat")
which do not find rocks or shells on which to set.
