Ben Oostdam's
Autobiography:

1960

At one of our first meetings with Rijkswaterstaat, John, who had a Ph.D. from Harvard, asked a rather naive question. Instantly, I felt a change in the mood and sense of status, and indeed, at the end of that day, we did loose the hard-gained privilege of being provided with a car and driver .

The rest of the week we spent sightseeing in Zeeland, spectacular Veere, and in Belgium, beautiful Brugge.

On the way, we saw part of the Delta-Plan then under construction.
We met Joost Terwindt and he gave me some excellent photographs of sedimentary layering taken during the excavations in the bottom of the estuary.
These had been exposed in the building pit in which the giant support pillars were built, which - after the pit had been flooded - were towed and positioned to the nearest centimeter across the estuary to form part of the giant storm surge barrier.
