I forgot to mention earlier that John Zeigler, my mentor, was scheduled to go to a sedimentology congress in Copenhagen, after which he was to go to Holland to talk to Rijkswaterstaat who had installed a wave-recorder off Katwijk along the Dutch coast. Jokingly, I had asked him to take me along because I had Navy contacts and could interpret Dutch. He had expanded on this and asked me to go to Holland a few weeks before he himself was to go so I could make preparations for the project. He also planned to take along the WHOI deep sea photographer/SCUBA diver, Dave Owen and I was to find a boat and diving partners for Dave. Thus I had been put on the CHAIN 13 cruise not only for training but also by way of transportation to Europe.
On August 2 , I flew from Helsinki to Holland via Copenhagen - where I bought a 75 c lunch and did some sightseeing. At Schiphol, I was picked up by my parents from Amstelveen, where I was going to stay for the rest of the month of August; John and his family and Dave were to arrive by August 24 and stay with us till September 3.
I made contacts with the Navy, Rijkswaterstaat (the Dutch government agency dealing with all aspects of water, now at this Website), the "Onderwater Jagers" (Underwater Hunters) , a new SCUBA divers club, and more. Fortunately, I was very aware of the Dutch preoccupation with "standing", so whenever I was asked about my status, I truthfully replied that I was a WHOI fellow. Because I had grown a beard during the cruise, my age was rather indeterminable, so merely on account of WHOI's reputation and my familiarity with one-upmanship, Rijkswaterstaat put at my disposal a car with driver. This was not only very useful for the project, but the driver walking around to open the door for me also greatly impressed my mother and the neighbors.
Even though SCUBA diving was still rather new in Holland, I managed to recruit two recreational divers, rent diving equipment and to charter a small boat in Katwijk. Thus everything was ready for the arrival of the principal investigator, on August 24 (by sheer coincidence, I am writing this exactly 42 years from that date).
We put John and Marilyn Zeigler and their three children in my parents' house, while Dave was to be housed with my Aunt Tine - an aristocratic middle-aged lady - several blocks away.
