May

Hermen Tasha and
Cape Cod drill-rig
For the month of May, I was assigned to Dr. John (zig-zag) Zeigler and ran up and down stairs to measure the time it took for individual sandgrains of certain sizes to fall all the way to the bottom of a giant settling tube.
I also helped a bit with the drilling into the Cape Cod spit at Provincetown, designed, built and tested current drifters, and took sediment samples and U.W. picts.

I also met the editor of the WHOI newsletter, Jan Hahn, who took me sailing in his boat

on which occasion
we loudly sang such
old Dutch shanties as
"Piet Hein,
Piet Hein"

and
"Ferme Jongens, Stoere Knapen.."

After several fine beach parties with clambakes and plenty of beer, I embarked on the R.V. "CHAIN" bound for MAR studies and Helsinki.
