September, 1960


I arrived at the large McQuireAFB in NJ on Sep 1, 1960 and made my way to Boston, where I stayed in Hotel Copley. The next day, I completed my business at Woods Hole: when the business manager asked me for my expense account for August, I told him I spent 75 cents on lunch in Copenhagen, but that in Holland I had stayed with my parents and not spent anything. He burst out laughing and I had to bargain him down to a $ 8 per diem so as not to upset the system's applecart. I said my goodbyes and thank you's, including to an old new friend, Richard Field.

Salt Lake City
to Salt Lake City , which we entered in the company of our hitchhiker, Lynn English. He showed us around, and we floated in the Salt Lake before she flew back to Canada and I drove on to La Jolla, California for stage 2 of my Oceanography career: A Sverdrup Fellowship at Scripps Institution of Oceanography.
