MY THREE PAGODA PASS JOURNAL

JUNE, 1957 , page 2

June 14, 1957, Saturday, cont.: In Kanchanaburi we bought such useful stuff as boots, waterbottles and ponchoes which one could not get in Bangkok. We also ordered ham and eggs and ice coffee at my usual restaurant where we arrived at 9 a.m. We inspected our luggage for a last time and returned everything we thought we could do without to Bangkok with the jeep.

At the small railroad station, we bought one ticket each to Wang Poo, at the rate of 6 ticals, roughly a US quarter.
Wang Poo lies on the same river as Kanburi, the Menam Kwe Noi (=small river Kwai) some 70 kms upstream.
This short voyage takes some three hours

After Wang Poo one can go by rail for another 25 kms , but beyond that rails are overgrown, deteriorated, removed and often seem to have completely disappeared.
