The next few days we acted like most honeymooners on Maui. In addition, Rose moved all my stuff into her room and cleared out and tore up a lot of her stuff that embarrassed her, after which she tried to start on mine. We walked along the beach, swam, watched Twilight Zones and Perry Masons and read comics. When we were too sore for what was earlier referred to as "hooting" but now must have gained a more respectable marital designation, I started my bibliography and Rose helped on pagination.
On June 15, I wrote letters to Inman and Cox and mailed them the original and first copy of my report from Kahului, where I also made reservations to fly to Europe. We made another dive off Kihei with Paul and a rather dull couple. I looked upon the reef with different eyes now, trying to forget about quantification and enjoying its various beauties. We had our first quarrel when I fried a batch of clams and retorted about her warning not to spatter fat. Rose took me to Mrs and Barbara Blacket to sew me a shirt and herself a muumuu and to test if Barb and I could keep our hands to ourselves.
Then I spent a busy week with two organizations, USOA and Intercultural Exchange, which chartered student flights to Europe. To my dismay, the flight of US$ 386 was canceled and replaced by a $ 550 flight of UAL.
I gathered almost $ 1K in $ 200+ lots from my Dad, UoH, SIO, and Phyllis and sold some $40 only Black Coral to Rev. Cleeland and a Mr Hirose. I taught Rose to plot and
we worked together on the Sample Appendix. Rose also enjoyed taking photographs with the expensive camera Willard had left her.
Finally, on Wednesday June 27 at 08:40 we left Maui for Honolulu to start our honeymoon voyage. At that time, we were planning to return to Maui by September to continue my thesis work and her last year of College, but we did not buy return tickets. I rented a car for the day and we spent the morning at UoH to type, copy, mail and say goodbyes - "the gang" was out as were my profs, so I only saw Ricky - and we proceeded to the Roundtop-Tantalus Drive. At 16:00 we dropped by in vain to see Mr. Hirose - so we walked along the beach, ate mahi-mahi at the International Market and saw "The Stripper" before driving to the Airport around 23:00 to catch our flight to New York via San Francisco. Although we were tired, we only got some 3 hours sleep and landed in S.F. at 07:00 where I tried, again in vain, to call my cousin Ben and his wife Lonnie. We barely made it back in time to board the long flight to New York with splendid views of the Rockies, and we arrived in New York late in the afternoon.
I guess this is a good place to end the 70 page - 3 year account of "Scripps" leaving some space for loose ends ....
