Maui :
June, 1963

Forgot to acknowledge that Paul Hoffmeister had flown to Honolulu to help me the last two days, so he and I returned to Maui on June 9 in the $ 7.35 packed-to-the-gunnels Skybus. A very excited Rose picked us up together with a flock of her friends, who all were leid.
After a good dinner, Rose, Ione and I went to the Paia movies, first about cowboys (here "Paniolos"), then "King Solomon's Mines".
June 10 and 11 we were busy preparing for our wedding on Wednesday 12. We went from one beautiful garden to another: at Mrs Blacket's , we picked Plumerias, and got benodorous Maile-lei leaves, next bunches of T leaves from Mrs Bruce and daughter Gail, plum-leaves and orchids from Mrs. Watson and daughters Anderson and Baldwin, then Monsteras from an acquaintance of neigbor Vi. We spent hours dismantling bamboo and making leis and flower art. I was almost overwhelmed by the attractive donors and the sweet smell of flowers and invited everyone we met to come to the wedding on short notice:

June 12, 1963 was our wedding day! All morning we arranged flowers and my noon shower was cut short by the arrival of Reverend Cleeland; I quickly dressed and collected my nervous bride so we could greet our guests who by local custom shook our hands with a banknote gift.

Some of the names I recorded:
Dr. Leebrick,
Dr. Shimer,
Mrs. Bruce,
Miss Ingman,
Mr. Balen,
Mr.Williams - ( probably all from
Maunaolu College

my friends:
Dr. Paul
Hoffmeister
Ricky Grigg (?)
Jason,
Dennis,
Hartman (who brought champagne
which exploded in the refrigerator)

and Rose's friends :
Nalani,
Barbara,
Mrs Blacket,
Anne,
Vi and more...

Wedding of Rose Petersen and Ben Oostdam
Maui, June 12, 1963
At 14:30 the Hawaiian Wedding Song accompanied the lovely and demure bride, dressed in a white holomuu, with veil, crownflowers, maile-lei and white tabis. It was a short, cheerful service, and Paul served as best man. Then all of a sudden everyone was gone and we took Ma to the airport where we had dinner while waiting for her plane to Oahu, wither she took our cake and the liver.
Rose was stung by a wasp, and I am still wondering what that is supposed to portend . . .
Some weeks later, I found out that she had sent a charming letter of introduction to my parents on June 8 - by happenstance, the wedding day of Lony!
