On Monday, May 27, Rose, Ione and Paul took Willard and me to the airport and after we landed in Honolulu
in the mid-afternoon, we took a limousine to the Waikiki Ebbtide Hotel and got him a $ 8 room.
I met my barber-friend Burt and admired his black coral display. I visited Eve who is returning to California on June 9. Called about my old car which would cost me $ 65 to repair. Had dinner in town with Willard after which we walked around the International Market.
Early May 28, Willard and I took the bus and he put his stuff aboard the "Matsonia" after we saw her come in with all the gay hula girls, leis and coin-diving ceremonies. We then went to the University, where I parked Willard in the library while I went to see Ralph and Doak and finally got the ok to use the scout to take him back to the ship and to pick up my equipment from the Maui barge at Young Bros, which filled up the entire jeep. Then reverse sequence: picked up Willard- with whom I left coral, then together to University to unload, lift with Vitusek to Waikiki, dinner at Jolly Roger and evening visit to Forbidden City.

After an early breakfast on May 29 and a visit to the UH Rose to discuss bills, Willard and I went for a drive to see some Oahu sites: The Punchbowl with its 18,000 graves - many with flags because of Thanksgivings; the Pali Lookout, Laie Church College and Laie Temple, along sugar cane roads. Next, we had a quick cheeseburger in Kaena, followed by a rainy drive along the Central Valley to Pearl Harbor and finally a brief visit to the fabulous Bishop Museum - where I missed seeing my friend Adrienne. |

On Thanksgivings Day, May 30, I took Willard to Hanauma Bay for his first mask and snorkel experience, and the next morning, May 31, we said goodbye at the terminal: what a splendid man! Received a letter from my parents announcing that my former fiancee, Lony, is getting married on June 8 ! Celibated(sp) that by seeing "Lawrence of Arabia" .Then - a bit sad and nostalgic - spent the rest of the day and MAY doing grainsize analyses in the Geology Lab. |
I started June 1 (Saturday) taking a quick swim with Burt, had car problems again on the way to the University where I spent till midnight doing 40 grainsize analyses (15 sieves on Rotap 15 minutes, then weighing, filing and determining % volcanics and calcarous constituents); I also talked with "the boys", including Baver, and with the trio Moberly, Abbott and Cox who dropped by the Lab. On June 2, I packed in the morning and did insoluble residues the rest of the day till I sacked out on some lifebelts in the lab for the night. The whole next week I worked on my report, dealt with bills and tickets, sale of car, Ricky re trailer, capping the effort with non-stop typing from 01:00 to 07:00 Saturday June 8. I let Ralph read it first and was happy to hear him admit it was much better than he had expected. Next, I gave it to Doak, who will send copy to Doug. I then took Eve and kids to Hanauma Bay and later that evening put them on the plane to California . The next morning, Sunday June 9, I took the Skybus back to Maui and Rose!
