Haleakala - LaPerouse Bay

Maui : May, 1963

Sunday, May 5 : Drive to Hana along spectacular road, but most uncomfortably in Rose's Thunderbird - present from brother Jim - loaded with Iona, Paul, and myself (right). Eat $ 1.00 mahi mahi, delicious! Found out Hana had been honored by a few days' visit of our Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands last month! Sorry we missed each other.
Saw Seven Pools, this time rather brown with sediment. The road is such that once a lifetime should be enough, like climbing Mount Fuji, but I am sure many will protest.
That evening, we dropped Paul in Wailuku and picked him up later after our exploration of the sugar cane fields and its nocturnal fauna.
May 6 : Paul ingratiates himself with Iona helping her gardening, while I fill the diving bottles. At Kihei, I picked up a check from the University of Hawaii - hurrah! - and a letter from Eve who claimed to be sick and need money. I sent her $ 100 and advised her to return to California.
On to Jason, who quibbles with Paul about accommodations; it is rather rough so I just make pointcounts at Carter's beach, while Paul swims around. Next, we have chop suey in Wailuku before returning to Spreckelsville where Rose asks if there is a "t" in equiptment - a truly philosophical question hard to answer.

May 7, Tuesday : Up at 6:00 and make a long dive and tow along the flow looking for sand channels.
We also anchored in the middle of La Perouse Bay where a large rock reaches from a depth of 50 ft to about 12 ft, and is surrounded by large fish; see threatening moray eel. Something made me bite through the rubber mouthpiece of my regulator... making it hard to hold onto it after that.

The lighthouse-shore has rather steep cliffs over 30 ft high, where Jason ventures sometimes for opihi.
It gets too rough so we go back around noon. We fill more bottles and I put on my boots and climb the cinder cone Puu O Lai .
We have dinner at the "Tasty Crust" and in the evening I work on data at Rose's place, where I end up typing her History paper till 25:00!
