Haleakala - LaPerouse Bay

Maui : May, 1963

Monday, May 1: Fill one bottle, then try to launch Jason's boat, but it is too rough and we swamp it. Weigh some 240 lbs fingercoral collected from 50cm2 area to determine density and "porosity", and take 20 min. wave record. Drive to Wailuku and see them bulldozing new road which annoys us. Lunch at Kameya's and hear about a "Lesman" named Irene. That evening, we see flares out at sea and call USCG about it.

in between lies Ahihi Bay
(at bottom right ) : La Perouse Bay

May 2 : Morning dive and transect near AXE, rough, note our two depth gauges differ by 10 ft! Coming up after dive, Paul heads for land: the rough lava and breakers....but I go for "makai" and wait till Jason picks me up. Wash off and photograph corals, fill bottles, note one of Tavaris' palmtrees toppled.

COMMENTS ?
May 3 : Jason sick so no boat; pack up coral in boxes, fill up jeep, drive to airport to meet with Mr Taliaferro (pronounced "Tollifer" as I recall from Grammar School English..) who gives us meteo records and is friend of Doak's. Introduced to 65- yr old Hawaiian Sam Kauhaapo, whose great-great-grandfather remembered Kalualapa flow, followed by Pimoe flow and finally crater eruption. Rain, sugar cane fields, eat malasadas (click each syllable!) May 4 : Saturday, also DAY 100 of this present HI-tour !
Go to Lahaina with Rose ("my Insular Rambler") and also dive together on Honolua Reef where water is milky. Catch and get free tow from sea turtle. Lunch at Tasty Crust, later Boy Scout Fair at Kahului. What a splendid island Maui is : Maui no ka oi ! Evening copy USGS charts.
