Hawaii I I I - oh! Maui April, 1963 |
|
Early on Sunday, April 7, Rose and I drove to La Perouse Bay . Jason agreed that Paul and I could stay at his place for $ 15 per week + expenses for food, gas and oil. We tried out our diving compressor and took two filled bottles back to her house in Spreckelsville, where the water proved to be rather murky. I considered "home-steading" on Molokini - having fallen in love with its clear waters - and Rose decided she wanted to get married. |

The rest of the week, Paul and I filled our bottles in the morning and mainly dived and did transects on the flows , but one day Jason took the three of us to Molokini where we enjoyed the dolphins and Paul and I made a 150 foot dive. We were also called by detective Ben Silva in Wailuku about the Ricky Grigg trailer affair, and I had a hard time stopping him from formally arresting me - I met the owner of the trailer Ricky had borrowed, and was happy to see how kind a man this was. At Silva's advice, I wrote a check for $ 150 which would be forfeited if the trailer would not be returned within 10 days. However, when I called Ricky with this good news, he told me he had sold the trailer....and apparently there was no chance to undo that. I then had to confront the Chief, who was less kind, and expressed the wish to meet Rick in person. We tentatively arranged that for the next week. That Sunday (April 14, "tax-day") it rained and Paul called from Lahaina that he would not dive. Rose and I visited her college and I planned to go back there to discuss a possible teaching position for me. I also met Abner Delima to talk about real estate, and he said that a property that 26 years ago went for $ 350 , now cost $ 300,000 !
