Hawaii I I I - oh!
early 1963

My second day, Saturday, Jan 26, 1963 and the next day, I had breakfasts with the SIO gang and lunches with Gus - who is a R.C. lay brother, drove to the University to drop off Scout for the boys who were working, packed boxes with my own and Shepard's "things" to ship back to California on board of the HORIZON, bought swimming trunks and went free diving in Hanauma Bay in the rain, went to the Aquarium and met several new acquaintances, prepared budget to discuss with Ralph and talked for hours into the night with my SIO-Texas Instrument man.
On Monday, the first side of my diary is here and records my first encounters with Laevastu, Bob George, and Rick Grigg, as well as a nice talk with Ralph and a visit to the library to look at La Perouse's Charts, while the second page mentions a discussion with Floyd McCoy re equipment, preparation of packing lists, and (bewitchedly, for sure ...)writing a letter to invite Eve the witch and her 2 little daughters to come enjoy Hawaii....

South West Maui Charts

without and with bulge of lavaflow
On Tuesday, I found some interesting differences in charts of Maui by La Perouse and Vancouver relevant to the age of the lava flow, so I decided to write an article about that.

I also talked again with Rick Grigg, a little wishy-washy, while later that day I affirmed with Ralph that (1) - they would ship the old jeep from Kauai to Maui (2) - I could use one of their Al boats and a trailer as well as a fathometer for several months (3) - I could buy an OB motor for it (4) - that we would charge Rick half and make use of his many contacts to get diving air, etc. I also received a copy of letter from Inman introducing me to Dick Greenbaum of Marine Advisors, Hawaii and got in touch with Anne Phillips while trying to reach Rick. Felt pretty good about progress on boat, diving and diving buddies, and Ralph's help.
