Hawaii I I I - oh! early 1963 |
Arrived Honolulu Airport by UAL at 13:00 on Friday January 25, 1963. What a relief to be back! Took taxi to University of Hawaii, where I briefly saw Ralph Moberly, Doak Cox and Ted Chamberlain busy with exams and expressing surprise and dismay. Ralph asked to see me Monday. Ted said boat use ok, but no diving till Diving Board finalized, not to use new International Scout, and that he needed McCoy and Campbell full-time. I also saw "the boys", transferred to old Bio lab, and admired the new setup, more military, many diagrams, photographs, notebooks - no 3 x 5's - and excessive ? renumbering of samples. Was introduced to Michele Kranik, Friz' girlfriend, who had been busy counting sandsamples in one phi-class and summarized calcareous to be mainly forams, quarter each algae and molluscs and rather little coral.
NOTE: My recently retrieved 3x5 card diary for 1963 starts on this date and although it gives almost too much info, I do not know if my reply to Ralph's cable and letter of early January, and Inman's remarks/remakes had actually preceeded me; in retrospect of 40 years I almost doubt it . . .

Ran into Hugh Bradner of Scripps, who is here for ocean bottom seismic work with the newly acquired NEPTUNE 1 and who kindly offered me to share their hotel accommodation. Look at notice board for used cars, take down address.
Gus Furumoto [one of the three "Fabulous Five"- to be - I know ] was so considerate to take me for coffee, after which I walked around Waikiki , ate an excellent Japanese dinner, then ambled over to the house of the guy departing for California and bought his car for $ 140. Had some trouble in the hotel finding a cot since I did not want to wake up Jim Dodds; fell asleep soon after some sad thoughts about cold reception - especially from Doak Cox (first of the three "Fabulous Five"- to be - )
