Thur, Oct.10: Arrived in Long Beach mid-afternoon by bus from La Jolla. Took taxi to Craig's Shipyard, where the exploration vessel "Rockeater" was being outfitted. Welcomed by red-haired Pete Johnson, Marine Engineer, a fine man. Saw the ship, briefly met Bascom at 18:00 and was invited to a welcome party by Pete's wife Jean, and Rosemary Stephansen, Erik's wife, who hailed from the Seychelles and knew the former Governor, Addison, father of my HSBC friend Stewart in Bangkok. Everyone very pleasant and excited about the diamond project. Slept in Motel Room which had been reserved for me.

Oct.11: Up at 07:00, breakfast with Bill Bascom and Jack McLelland, Engineer. We visited a junkyard that morning with Bill and Erik, took picts, and in the afternoon we went to the beach to search for good place to experiment with pumps and jets. I got a check for $ 150 and a rental car, and that evening visited a large fair in L.A.

Oct.12, Sat.: After breakfast with Bill who told me to consider this my home-base, we visited the "Rockeater" again, had lunch with quite a number of people after which Erik and I discussed jet-pumps with Mr. Burk. We then had some long brain-storming meeting, after which Bill left for la Jolla, Jack for Washington, and the rest of us including Rosemarie and Gigi Stephansen for a fine outside taco picnic. I transfered to the Naples Motel for $ 65/month and had some drinks with Erik.

Oct.13, Sun: A pleasant and quiet day, with two long walks along the World's largest marina, and along Long Beach beach. Also started draft paper on date of La Perouse Bay lava-flow plus read my own report for the first time ...
