Wednesday November 18, 1964: This was the last day of our "Emerson K" cruise to VEMA Seamount. We departed VEMA on the afternoon of November 16, after diving till noon and a final dredge drag bringing up basalt. The next day, Wednesday, I was seasick again and read 3 books: Campbell's Kingdom, Mike Hammer and Air Bridge. Thursday was windy and I was still sick. Also discussed publication of cruise results with Professor Simpson. It was good to see spectacular Capetown again, and at 16:20 we tied up, said our goodbyes and were carried off by family and friends, in my case Mercia and Gowdy, who took me to Rosemarie's and the car. We had dinner with Susan and went to the movies in Goodwood with Sakkie, etc.
Thursday 19 - Sunday 22 November, 1964: A bit anti-climactic after the cruise, slowly started getting back to evaluation and reports. Robin ran off with file on grainsize analyses. Spent much time with the Kleinjans, freshly arrived from Holland: Leendert (Drs.Geology), Corrie, Hanneke and ? (Note: they were still in South Africa as of 2005) We had dinner at Mercia's parents and younger brothers Gus, Jackie and Chris. (I last visited the brothers in 2005). On Saturday morning, to town to buy a newspaper with my picture on the front page, sun-bathing on the "Emerson K" ! Also got the next "Rockeater" cruise underway, but on Sunday morning Captain Cook telephoned to report that she had lost an anchor in a storm and had gone to Luderitz.
Monday, November 23, 1964: A very long day starting with instructions to Rockeater to either do lines 18,19 and 20 or go to Plum Pudding Island, depending on sea conditions. The usual Monday morning report to Washington, numerous telexes to be answered in the afternoon, and in the meantime Mercia was dressing up at home so she looked very chique in black dress and new contact lenses when I picked her up at 19:00 for the next party at Dave's for the McCulloghs.
Tuesday 24 through Monday 30 November, 1964: Mainly busy on evaluation. Also worked in Kleinjan, and had several discussions on statistics with Dr. Fuller of UCT, Harvey and Dave. Applications, telexes with Mr. Daniels re CDM. 27th Rockeater crew debriefing, complaints by de Graaff against Jerry. Babysit little Eric when Rosemarie goes to Malay wedding in high red hat. Read Shaka Zulu. Talks with George and Swart re helicopter survey.
