OCEAN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

p.84, Ben Oostdam's Autobiography
Saturday, October 24, 1964: We got up late and I went to the office to clear my desk etc. till an angry Mercia called me at 15:00. Quarreled a bit with Dave and went home where I continued working on the new 4-month cruise proposal for the Tidal Diamond Concession. We had a visit by Marie and Kosie and a German ??, and went to bed around 21:00.
Sunday, October 25, 1964: We woke up early and Mercia brought me a nice breakfast. I worked on the proposal till early noon, when we went to the Dollhouse for lunch followed by a trip to Melkboschstrand. A lot of seaweed, but what a view ! Around 16:00 I went to see Dave and we worked together till about 18:30 without any problems. I then took Mercia to the Caroussel, after which we visited the Stephansens and played Monopoly till past midnight: Rosemarie won and was delightfully excited.
Monday, 26: Continued Tidal Proposal and completed Rockeater VII cruise report including write-up for Murray about mining cone and factor. Discussions about results with Robin and Eric.
Tuesday, 27: More Tidal, and invitation by Roy for party Friday. Movies shots of office and staff by Mr Field orchestrated by Dave. Party at Mrs. Taylor's, Dave' private secretary. Slides, punch, funny Gavin.
Wednesday, 28: Practically all-day discussion with Dr. Murray and Mr. Daniel, quite interesting and successful. Called Hoffman asking for more Diamantkus results. Make arrangements for Dutch applicants, which had been interviewed by Bascom with my mother acting as secretary/time-keeper/disciplinarian. That evening, a good party at Dave, including the Anglo people and a very humorous McConnaghy. Mercia talked with Louis Murray but did not want to join them for dinner, so we go home while they took off for the Greek Tavern till the early hours of the morning..
Thursday, 29; All morning discussion with Mr McConnaghy; disppointed with statistical evaluation we received from Dr. Sichel: too wide a range! After a late lunch at the office, Messrs. Murray and McConnaghy took off for the airport and Joburg. A new receptionist was hired (Dawn?) and two of the Dutch ship-officers-hirees arrived to report for duty: de Graaf and van der Vloodt. We had some wine with George and a happy Dave.
Friday, 30: While we were sweating over several different evaluation methods, we had an invasion of the womenfolk and had to cough up funds to have them buy dresses for to-night's party. This was quite an event, Freemasons at Arthur's Seat, including flirtations, speeches and dances.
Saturday, October 31, 1964: Up late and back from office early, I thought, but too late for teary-eyed Mercia. We went to the beach and a bad drive-in, then picked up the Stephansens to go and pick up a niece from the Seychelles. It was very hot, everybody was irritable and there were some tactless remarks made about a movie showing the Seychelles and its "natives".
