OCEAN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

p.76, Ben Oostdam's Autobiography
Thursday, October 8, 1964: Spent most of the day with Dr Guest to help him data as well as such acquisitions for Anglo's research cataramaran as current meters, corers and grabs. Lunch with him at Tulbach's; therefore, just a quick can of sardines for dinner followed by piano party with Mercia, Marie and Kosie, taperecorder and cake I had bought. All very nice, I thought, but when can I start doing some work on my Ph.D ?
Friday, October 9, 1964: Took Mercia to hairdressers and spent most of the day meeting with Dave and ships officers, drinking and coordinating the Washington letter and instructing Roy Heath. Also a quick geo meeting with Willy van der Merwe and Pete Lamming. By 17:00, I went home in the rain and picked up Mercia for tha party in a colorful black and gold setting. Everybody was happy and most congenial, including Roy and his girlfriend Dorothy, Nicholas with a Dutch girl, Lamming with Simpson's Erica and Mercia who ate a lot. We next proceeded to Eric's where Dave's kids were crying, then to Clifton with Pete and his exciting girlfriend with built-in bra and a fish-and mechanical mind, a boring draftsman, Fred who proved to be a good dancer and several beautiful girls. Believe it or not, but Mercia and I were home by 23:00 although it felt like much later.
Saturday 10 and Sunday 11 October, 1964: A rainy weekend, so no sailing and much sleeping. George brought over Pete and a lot of gear on their late way back to CDM. I worked on Tidal and evaluations, played Chinese chess and took Mercia to an excellent steak dinner at Rosemarie's with Patsy, who had cramps. After that, Mercia and I continued to the Doll-house, which was claustrophobic. Sunday morning telephone calls with Dave re Jack who had had some accident.
We went to Goodwood for lunch an to admire Chris' beautiful rocks ("klippe"), then I worked some more on Tidal and MDC reports (incl.photo of "oversize" rocks, right) till 15:30, when I met with Dave and together re-did everything because he was unhappy about it. One thing, he is a meticulous writer.
By 20:00 I got back home and packed for the Rockeater cruise and "we(a)thered" some more calls by Dave, almost literally "op de valreep" (just before the ship's departure).
