OCEAN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

p.71, Ben Oostdam's Autobiography

Sep. 7, 1964: We got up late, took a bath together and called a taxi to take me to the office at noon. Dave and I left for the airport and flew to Jo'burg, where we checked in and had dinner at the Park Royal, including snails and smoked eel. We also had a long talk with an American couple from Detroit(Steel).

Sep. 8, 1964: (Wrote this in De Beers' Boardroom while Dave is having lunch(eon) with Messrs DuPreez, Neethling, Brown and other VIPs.) This morning, we met with Anglo's Chief Geologist, Dr. Waters and Dr. Murray about their three evaluations methods, one of which samish as ours, the others lower. I was the one chosen to try and shoot holes in those two (evaluations). I also talked with Charles Stocken and Owen Siddle, but had lunch by myself. During the afternoon, all geologists met and "they" expressed concerns about our measurement of "fines" and considerable "coning" during drilling. I defended our practices till about 4 p.m, then went to the airport with Charles, and a promise by Dr Waters to anticipate a letter regarding beach sampling. On the plane back to Capetown, I read TIME and had a good drink. After a bus-trip first and taxi next, I surprised Mercia in the kitchen with Giesie and Rachel. Pleasant reunion ensued.

Wednesday, Sep.9, 1964: Clean up office with Willie, since Pete is on vacation. Then went to airport to pick up a small planeload full of Stephansen family and George. Took them to my house, where Mercia admitted embarrassedly that she had not accepted a collect phone call from George... So we felt sorry for her and Giezie but a good lunch took care of that. That evening it was "Too Hot for June", a good spy story.

Sep.10, 1964: Debrief Erik about beach sampling project. Dave gets back from Joburg late that afternoon. Had drinks with Eric and Rosemarie and babysat for them while they went for dinner with some friends.

Friday, Sep.11, 1964: Busy in the office. Tried to buy roof rack for car and then loan it to Erik. Drinks with George and a man Ollie who told us he left (1) a letter under his wife's plate and (2) for Pernambuco and sea for two years.
