OCEAN SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING

page 40 - March, 1964, Ben Oostdam's Autobiography

March 14 Sat - 15 Sun: Lunch with Dave and discussion about sending Robin to CDM for gully project. Dave had spoken with Erik and showed some of his beach project photographs. Call and left word for Robin at his mother's. Drive with Chris up the mountain and talked about new job. In the evening, I visited Captain Cook and made more recordings. Sun we slept late and drove to Miller's Creek where Chris had an interview, I think with a Swiss, Mr. Moser.

March 16, Mon: Worked on the lab and asked Hofman for a copy of the U.N. Continental Shelf "Law". Chris very active and off to Wijnberg.

March 17, Tue: Made several trips to "Rockeater" and get annoyed with continuous changes in plans. Secure Ed Horton's approval of geo-lab module. Received sympathetic letter from Kay Wright. Wrote to Scripps. Dinner, quarrel and make-up with Chris.

March 18, Wed:
At 10:00 letter from Rose that she had given birth on March 10 to a son who she had named Daniel Allen (Oostdam)!

Our Son Dan, Sep. 1964
I was very happy on the one hand but mostly very sad for not being there with them on the other. Dave was very kind and let me have the rest of the day off.

I walked to Chris' restaurant and told her. She was very understanding and I drove her new red Volkswagen to my guesthouse. On the way there, I moved to the right and was hit by a messenger boy racing on a delivery bike. The collision damaged the right door, but I was more worried about the messenger, who was lying motionless over his bike. A group of pedestrians collected around us, of which one said half-loud "Hij es dood." (he is dead). It was a great relief when the boy lifted his head and said "Dat sal die dag syn!" (that will be the day ...) To my regret, I do not recall what happened next, but it looked as if he and his broken bike disappeared into thin air, while I do have record of a R 87bill for repairs on the door. Thus both Chris and I were disturbed a lot, and to top it off she got a bad toothache, so I drove her to Wynberg and practically forced her to go to a dentist. Later I wrote to Rose and later that night, Chris disappeared for a couple of hours with a rough looking bunch of fishermen-friends.
