January 1, , Wednesday: Had a rather sleepless and melancholy first night, ending with breakfast at 07:00. Dropped by Denise after that, and again at 11:00 and13:00 but to no avail. In the meantime, wrote letters home, to Rose and to Jan Hempenius, and visited the Wrights. In the afternoon, we went sailing, Denise with Bill Mitchell, I "single-handed" or solitary, on a "Debchick", a cute little boat like a sailfish but with a foresail. (I tried to look it up on the WWW but this is all I came across ...). There was a race using shuffles for paddles and we retired rather cold to the Yacht Club which I promised to join soon . After some drinks, we went home, played my recorder and had our first quarrel of the year; I added to my list of New Year's resolutions "to stay away from women."
January 2, Spent most of the day with welders on the CAT-crane. At 16:00, I met with Borchers, who told me that I had to go to Capetown for a week: urgently, again! So I packed, and searched in vain for Denise to tell her. Left instructions for Venske.
January 3, - (my Father's 55th birthday): Ran around, arrangements with X-Ray, no place on plane.
Finally, a place was found (made?) and I flew to Capetown sitting next to a beautiful redhead, Carole,
who changed my N.Y. resolution.

In the OSESA office in Capetown - the DeBeer's Board-room at the top of St. George's Street - close to the church at the left - I heard that Dave was in Jo'burg, so I liaised with Pete Smith and was put up in the "Mount Nelson Hotel". |

Later, I had drinks and dinner there with Dave, fresh back from Jo'burg and politics. After that, I called Rita and we went for a night walk on the pleasant beach of Sea Point, etc.(the term "default" comes to mind 40 years later, but it was just my fault)
