COMPARISON OF NAMIB DESERT
DUNE - BEACH and OFFSHORE SEDIMENT SAMPLES

In February,1965, a line of dune and beach samples was collected and compared with a series of nearby offshore samples collected by the "Rockeater".
Offshore- as well as dune samples are finer but less well-sorted and rounded than the beach samples. Discriminant analysis performed on these samples supported the hypothesis that three parameters (mean size, sorting and roundness) can be used with high confidence to differentiate between these three depositional environments (dunes, beaches and offshore).Quite likely, the Namib desert dunes consist of sands carried by longshore currents and blown inland across the beach.
