| Some time after midnight we bussed up to - I think - station 8 of Fuji-san, some 3,000 m high. Everyone was both excited and groggy, and there were many of us. At every reststop we had our sticks brandmarked. We reached the top around daybreak and enjoyed a marvelous view. The descent was much faster and exhilarating, jumping down and sliding on top of sand-size ash particles. All in all, it was a serene and unifying experience, unique in that you should not do it a second time.
