given my outline to Shepard Mo.aft. (Nov.5,1962)
He then mentioned that he had written to Hawaii regarding the Sonoprobe, whereupon I asked him to keep the letter till he'd read the proposal.
He said that I could always add to it.
Shepard Tu.mo. (Nov.6, 1962) told me that Hawaii had sorted out their fin.affairs. I decided later to ask to see this, & ask also to see a copy of the letter he sent yesterday; he was not in, & Betty let me read that copy.
It said that Ben had not done too much work yet,(my note NB: proposal only due Dec.)
so that he had decided to answer the Sonoprobe questions partly:
1 - works alright in sand (Curray & Moore)
2 - can be used on a small boat, over the stern, easy and light to install
3 - technician full time required
- - technician (only needs) small amount of training
4 - relatively cheap & small to be shipped, etc. repairs...(easy)
Later on I asked for a copy, but he did not want me to have one: parts only.
I did not mention my source, but cross-checked w/ van Andel & Andy (Soutar):
a - sand not too good
b -not
on small boat: metal hull, side-arms, etc.;; would not let me have it if put on stern small boat
c - needs considerable time and experience
d - repairs:
(i) preliminaries, at several 1,000's of $ at my cost, possible, would take lots of time
(ii) (Sonoprobe needs to be ) back in time for Cal - say March
(iii) intends repairs + add.power + installation along w/ ESP of Shor at $ 10K
(iv) since going to Haw.in Spring '64, maybe better to wait
told this to Shepard, whereupon I was allowed to get letter back from mailroom.
I said I would write new draft.
He said he had not finished my report yet, but why did I start with definitions?
About 1/2 hour later, he came to my office and handed the proposal back, saying that he was all confused, that I should write it in English, still don't know what you are talking about but let somebody else of the committee read it *
(witnessed by Andy Soutar)
* However, from the corrections it appears that he has only read part of the paper.
Asked Arthur to do this, and explained to him the negatives on the Sonoprobe.
He did not want to read it, thought Inman would be the man.
