Early in the morning on August 15, I was walking along the highway when I noticed a team of young surveyors. I asked one of the chainmen whether there would be any surveying jobs available, but he said they only hired experienced surveyors. Well, I told him that I had two McGill surveying courses under my belt, so I was qualified. Somewhat impressed, he took me to the party chief at the office, who instantly hired me.
![]() Thus it came about that I worked for the Government of British Columbia for almost 4 weeks. It was a most enjoyable job, working on the construction of a scenic park driveway. |

Since we were rather high up in the Rockies and at the end of the summer, we had the strange experience of seeing fresh snow in the morning, when we were wrapped up against the cold, but worked topless in the afternoon when the nearby sun heated us up. We slept and ate in some wooden barracks and had quite some conversations.
