| It was a great relief to get out of the Friday pm traffic mess in Mthatha by 16:00 and to get on the progressively more scenic route R61 to Port St. Johns, some 90 km east! It was still drizzling, but we had some periods of sun, too. A few km before Port St Johns, we saw some impressive cliffs with purple trees on the other side of the river. The town itself was muddy and less crowded. We passed the Carlton Hotel and decided not to stay there after the numerous problems with booking by E-mail. Instead, we went to the attractive Umzimvubu Retreat, where Jaco served us an excellent dinner and skimpy breakfast separated by a good night's rest. The next morning, we visited beaches one and two and talked with some environmentalists about the ilmenite mining operations in Wild Coast dunes, before we left for Mthatha at 11:00 . |
