We left Butterworth at 12:30 and soon reached the Mazeppa Bay road. The best way to get to the Wild Coast towns is to take a branch road from the main route N2, because there are few and very difficult direct connections from one port to the next.
That's why I had rerouted our original tour and now was using Umthatha, the capitol, as a hinge. I had even planned to use "Barbara's Guesthouse" as our base of operations for three day-trips.
About 14:00 we reached very crowded Umtata (415K Google links) = Umthatha (645) = Mthatha (271K)
