2005 BALKANS TOUR

Ben Oostdam

Budapest

Then I walked on past some old clothes' shops, bought a liter of 1.5% fat milk for 197 forints, and sat against a garden fence in a side street and drank it. Next, I crossed over to a stately church which I entered to listen to the organist for a half an hour and ponder. Later, I took another sidestreet where I admired the Romanian Embassy and its tourist info stand. Onward, to the end of that street, a T - junction, where I crossed and walked on to a High School with outdoor sportsfield. Some boys were being trained to play soccer, 5% of them full of enthousiasm, 80% indifferent and the rest hostile.
It was a fine, breezy day and I found a park where I enjoyed seeing little children and their mothers and grandparents playing not only on swings and seesaws, but even on a miniature cable-cart. No pictures this time, since I had left my camera in my pack. The quiet was only broken by some far away siren and some turtle doves. An old grandpa taught his grandson to take a leak behind a large tree. By now it was lunch time and I had a fine meal, - this time in a Chinese restaurant! After lunch, I finished walking my square and found back the hotel. I took a quick shower and slept the rest of the afternoon.
At 5 pm, I was ready to go again. First, the new receptionist told me I could only stay one night. Undaunted, I took tram #7 to Ferenc Square from where I walked to the Danube and took some photos - one of a happy Turkish tourist who stopped to chat.
I then decided to walk back to the Hotel, making another stop at Burger King-phooey- for a milkshake and 3 pieces of chicken. Some guys on rollerblades rode in and the manager flinched.I saw a "Phone Book for English Speeking Companies." please click to enlarge

Just before reaching my Hotel, I dropped into a Grocery Store for more milk and candy, but really to see what it was like.
Before disappearing into my room for the night, I formally protested to the reception.
