2005 BALKANS TOUR

Ben Oostdam

DALMATIA:
SPLIT to STIKOVICA

by bus . . .
The bus tour was very enjoyable even though it rained and was overcast most of the time. I outdid myself taking photographs and attempting to keep record of place names, but - in retrospect - did not do too good a job of it: therefore, I show a square dozen square [12E2 or 122] of thumbnails here so you can click and find the best shots or link to maps and photographs by others - favored with better weather and more common sense, and not "forced" to shoot from a mobile platform! You are also invited to send me an E-mail with comments, or identifying locations of my thumbnails.
I particularly liked the small harbors and coves set against the background of high limestone Dinaric Alps, the wave refraction patterns, the port of Ploce (12:30, 10 min break, young bird fell out of nest onto conductor's head) and the delta of the Neretva river with the numerous hand-dug ditches, and later, the sudden enclave of Neum, (13:20, 10 min.break) the only seaside port of Bosnia-Herzegovina in a bay which also featured shellfish rafts as does Ston(13:40) on the impressive Peljesac Peninsula

I got off the bus at 14:30 at Stikovica, almost feeling like coming home! Unpacked, relaxed, had a drink with my host and a pleasant evening dinner with two German couples. Lots of jokes, a.o. freshly coined moniker Monica humidorifricatrice. Slept very well that night auspicating to-morrow's visit to Dubrovnik!
