2005 BALKANS TOURBen Oostdam | SPLIT |
| Split was magnificent on this bright day. I put my luggage in the garderobe of the combined railway and bus terminal, and headed straight for the old town. This practically consists of the greatly modified but still most impressive palace which the Roman Emperor Diocletian built for his retirement around 300 A.D. (below). |

|
| I also took in the fine local market and the stark statue of Bishop Grgur Ninski who in the 10th century A.D. changed the liturgy from Latin to Croatian (right) |
|
| After a coffee with sandwich I bought a
ticket at Jadrolinija for the 2 pm catamaran to the island of Hvar. |
