2005 BALKANS TOUR

Ben Oostdam

I tried to forget my superstitions and woke up to the sibilant sounds of surf and swallows. I shaved, showered and did my laundry. Mandica served me breakfast on my porch: 6 sticks of fresh bread, butter and marmalade, a dishload of cheese and sausage, a soft-boiled egg, oranges from the tree below and coffee with milk and sugar.

The swallows sounded like a bunch of American schoolgirls and were not at all shy. I also met a gruffy 75 year old German who spent 7 months a year here for the last decade.
Natasha Njiric
Natasha and her sister Mariana, a Spanish teacher/guide, had already left for work. I packed, changed some Euros to kuna, and was taken to the bus stop for the 10:45 bus towards Split. It was a comfortable feeling that I would return here for another two nights next week: like coming home! Less comfortable was the fact that several buses passed me without stopping.
In due course, however, a pleasant bus-driver took mercy on me and 180 kuna off me. He drove me past numerous sea sights all the way to my destination for this day and date: the town of STON, where I had reservations at Vila Koruna . It was here I planned to savor their famous oysters, possibly in the company of Simon and Verity, my New Zealand mates.
