2005 BALKANS TOUR

Ben Oostdam

This time, Valdete had arranged for the father of her brother's wife to take us (her husband Arben, herself, their small son and me) across the bridge at the foot of the citadel to her brother's home - on the other bank of Lake Shkodra.
I was introduced to her brother and wife (left) who had caught and prepared some Lake "crap" (carp?) especially in my honor.
We conducted our conversation in French, with Valdeta's energetic translation. She had been married since age 16 and they had lived in Belgium for some 7 years, where she had always acted as interpreter for her entire family, consisting of 6 brothers and 3 sisters - of which she was the youngest but tallest. Upon special request, a roomful of delightful children emerged for photographs. In all, it was a delightful evening which ended with Dad picking Arben and me up to return us to my hotel, where an embrace by Valdeta's unshaven husband was my final farewell to this fine and most hospitable Muslim family.
