| Late in the afternoon, I ran across Marcel again at the higher chapel, where he was talking with some Dutch tourists from Zwolle, while listening to a doodlebag player. We climbed on to the next level and visited first a newly built church, then a model of the former cathedral (?) at that site. We skipped the next climb to the fortress at the top, but took a picture of the signpost to a bar with the exact distance given in meters: above that sign you can see the Macedonian flag waving on top of the castle (see photographs below). |

| We talked to an old-timer working on his fence and wearing an Adidas cap. He told us his father as well as his sons had been or were in the USA. He himself never traveled, prefering to stay close to this site, which was the first Balkan University established by Clement in 1,116 (my own University celebrates its 150th anniversay now) with some 3,500 students copying books and studying agriculture. We went on to the Roman amphitheater, passed a Jamaican garage and talked to the lady with 7 daughters who ran a B and B and had a block and tackle mounted on top of the wall to handle the cement bags for a new construction job. |

Our "own" restaurant was closed when we got back at 20:00, but the owner of the neighboring diner was sitting working on schlabones.
We had to persuade him to serve us a quick dinner of ham and cheese, fried little fish and beer, then
talked to late in the night about seafloor spreading, when the Mediterranean was dry and the benefits of Marcel's cell-phone. |
