2005 BALKANS TOUR

Ben Oostdam

Subotica
Beograd
SERBIA
This was my last day with Nicola and Aurora at Malcon Inn. After breakfast, I took a bus to the center of Subotica and walked around for an hour or so. It was rather crowded, and I noticed how few people were overweight as compared to a similar crowd in the USA. I took a picture of Hotel Patras which was fully booked, so that Nicola's alternative hotel is not a bad idea.
Next, I packed up and at 15:00 Nicola picked me up and took me to the Railroad Station, where we had a beer and tried to initiate my Balkan Railroad Pass and Reservation properly; recall that it could not start in Hungary. People were recalcitrant, however, and no one wanted to stamp the pass, claiming that it was not necessary.

I decided to postpone the stamping till Belgrade, and boarded the train for a three hour ride. It almost hurt to leave Nicola who had been such a fine host!
On the train, I kept on taking pictures till - just past Novi Sad and the Danube (where 3 bridges were destroyed in the NATO campaing against Yugoslavia in 1999)- it started raining. It also rained when I got off the train in dark Beograd and found my hotel (Astoria) nearby. Rather than going to MacDonalds or Wimpies, I ate in a small local restaurant, just pointing at the food I fancied to the lady ladling it on my plate. Since I would have to leave rather early the next morning, I did not go on the town but straight to bed at 21:00.
