SUMMER 1963 TOUR, p.41

Ben Oostdam's Autobiography:

Friday, August 9, 1963, (cont.) :After Ancona, we drove through the heavy rain and mountains with (other) cities on top to the landlocked Republic of San Marino, which we reached by noon. It was crowded and we parked outside the gate, paid 100 lires to use the nice clean bathroom and walked through the narrow streets full of tourists, mostly German. After a rapid lunch, we took the spectacular cablecar tour to and from the castle and enjoyed the marvelous view in the air just cleared by the rain.

I bought a series of stamps showing antique ships - strange with the Republic's name to be landlocked.
