Sunday, August 4, 1963, cont.: After an excellent night of rest and a mandi, Rose did some laundry while I wrote postcards. We then drove into town searching for a road to the spectacular Palamidi Fortress overlooking Nafplio.

We then found the more conventional route, avoiding the 857 (not 999) steps to the 215 m high fortress built between 1711 and 1714 by the Venetian Lasalle. Once it was occupied by 4,000 Turks who were surprised and ejected by 900 Greeks.
