SUMMER 1963 TOUR, p.29

Ben Oostdam's Autobiography:

Sunday, August 4, 1963, cont.: After an excellent night of rest and a mandi, Rose did some laundry while I wrote postcards. We then drove into town searching for a road to the spectacular Palamidi Fortress overlooking Nafplio.

We parked and walked to the end of a road, and on the way back I jokingly suggested we scale the cliff. Rose seriously accepted the challenge and spurred me on till I crawled up a chimney and thought of the risks om climbing by myself, so I carefully and fumingly descended fearing to have to bear this for the rest of my life. But Rose sat there drinking lemonade with a Greek so end of sermon-to-be.

We then found the more conventional route, avoiding the 857 (not 999) steps to the 215 m high fortress built between 1711 and 1714 by the Venetian Lasalle. Once it was occupied by 4,000 Turks who were surprised and ejected by 900 Greeks. It commands a fantastic view over Epidauros
