SUMMER 1963 TOUR, p.21

Ben Oostdam's Autobiography:

Naples itself was outrageously crowded.
A long time we were caught behind a high-loaded donkeycart, which made Rose feel very sorry. We passed thousands of children, cars, and delapidated houses, but the harbor seemed out of reach.

We then followed miles of donkeys-packed roads out of Naples and towards the majestic Vesuvius and it was getting dark when we finally pitched our tent in a garden behind a restaurant in Pompeji.
In stark contrast to my first visit hereabouts on the Dutch aircraft carrier "Karel Doorman", 13 years earlier when we cruised off Naples and wanted ashore, I now would have liked to see the coast and the sea but could not...
In 1960, Sophia Loren and Clark Gable appeared in this fine movie (right) and I must admit a certain infatuation with the former and admiration for the latter... In 1963 - year Rose and I "did" Naples - Sophia appeared in "The Fall of the Roman Empire" with a.o. Alec Guinness and Omar Sharif as well as in "Ieri, oggi, domani"
(yesterday, today, tomorrow) with Marcello Mastroianni
