
| Naples itself was outrageously crowded. A long time we were caught behind a high-loaded donkeycart, which made Rose feel very sorry. We passed thousands of children, cars, and delapidated houses, but the harbor seemed out of reach. |
We then followed miles of donkeys-packed roads out of Naples and towards the majestic Vesuvius and it was getting dark when we finally pitched our tent in a garden behind a restaurant in Pompeji. In stark contrast to my first visit hereabouts on the Dutch aircraft carrier "Karel Doorman", 13 years earlier when we cruised off Naples and wanted ashore, I now would have liked to see the coast and the sea but could not...
