SUMMER 1963 p.57

Ben Oostdam's Autobiography:

October 1 Tuesday: Did own graphs, Inman asks to add one of Median versus sigma-phi and alpha-phi . Bruno and Allison had had a daughter! Herb introduced me to his new friend Carol just after a bee stung her finger. Worked till 20:00, then we drove to Mission Valley to go skating. Met Georgina and husband John on a scooter: she already knew I got married, too.
Oct. 2: continued drawings, attended Andy Soutar's seminar with Mell Peterson and Ed Winterer re circum-Pacific geology.
Oct. 3: Awoke to noise of rummage sale at church across the street...bought dozen or so suitcases and "hutkoffers" for $ 5, transported them to my SIO office for pendant evacuation. Had papers and photographs copied. Ran into Ricky Grigg who is going on date with the Princess in the Brothers Grimm!
Oct.4: Send Rose $ 80. Asked McGowan to read my new work, since I expect to be called away by Bascom "momentarily". Buy paper and try to organize an electric typewriter. Had fish dinner with Herb at Anthony's Grotto, after which we packed all my stuff and went to see "Mondo Cane" in San Diego.
Oct.5, Sat.: still trying to secure electric typewriter, no luck with Inman who referred me to Wendell. Another fish lunch with Herb, then we went to Moriarty's seminar on "Early Man in San Diego" in Sherwood Hall, good. Celebrated Wolfgang's birthday at Tony's and International House.
Oct.6: Met Wendell at 13:00, talked about job, and borrowed "his" electric typewriter on which I typed until 23:00 with brief break for Mexican Special in Courtroom with Herb. His enthousiasm is inspiring!
Oct.7: McGowan still not done..I type all day. Message via Hoover from Bascom that they need me in Long Beach. Dinner with Herb in Polynesian restaurant, with Mai-Tais!
Oct.8: Called Bascom who wants me ASAP, perhaps by ship to South Africa? Agree with Moriarty to complete report to-morrow. Except for brief dinner on lawn, some short walks and many nuts, I type all through the night till . . .
Oct.9 08:30 when I finished page 99! The rest of the morning I did captions, contents, list of figures and tables, and copying (7x) till 11:00 when I went to La Jolla, read the mail from Rose and Holland, and got some sleep.
Oct.10: Finally, talk with McGowan which was very disappointing. He suggested I go to another University, there's no hope here...my first draft had been a mess, so this rewrite would have had to be perfect; instead is was merely "good"....
At 11:00, Andy Soutar and Frank Emmel helped move my stuff from the office, which we took to Andy's place for repacking and storage. Quick goodbyes. At 12:45 I stepped on the Greyhound Bus to Long Beach to start the next chapter of my life.

NOTE on October 3, 2003: Although I did keep in touch with Inman and visited SIO several times since, some doubts I had about attending the Centennial Celebrations last week were resolved when I got sick an could not go even if I wanted.
Therefore, I offer Scripps Institution of Oceanography my very best wishes for continued success into their second century!
I noticed that both Inman and Goldberg are still around as emeriti, but failed to find McGowan
