Sept.3 Tuesday:
Spent the day visiting Rose's family in Salt Lake City, including her half-brother Willard Harwood whom I had already met in Maui; admired some of his father's paintings. We went to her old High School, played bowl and did some unpleasant quarreling.
Sept.4 Wed: After a pleasant drive to the canyon, I packed up, said goodbyes and Rose took me to the airport where I was just in time for a $ 50 flight to San Diego via Los Angeles. From there I took a bus to La Jolla and stayed with the Soutars, i.e. Andy was out at sea and Joan had just had her third baby boy a week ago! I biked to Scripps, met Inman's new secretary (Helene had married Steve!) and Jim Larsen; most people seemed gone since registration was Sep.16. Joan and I ordered pizza and played a new type of domino.
Sept.5 Thur: Went on the bike and had a pleasant talk with Shepard who intimated that "the" decision was up to my Committee. Lunched with Ricky Grigg, Herb and Wolfgang. Back at Waverley domino and reading "The Blue Nile"
Sept.6 Fri: Had a thorough talk with McGowan from 09:30-11:30. He recommended that I rewrite the report/thesis and was rather cool. Met Bruno d'Anglejean and found out that Allyson is expecting soon!
Sept.7/8 : Spent some time babysitting, reading and swimming in the La Jolla Cove.
Sept.9/13: Biked to SIO early morning, returned around 18:00. Rewriting report; lunches on campus with Herb (50 c roastbeef on wheat, 15 c milk); occasional maitai with lunch who raves about Tahiti. Domestic evenings with Joan and the 3 boys; she's happy when I get back and she can stop baby-talk.
Sept.15:Ted Foster back from WHOI
Sept.16 Mon:Registration problems. Inman gave me a grade of "A" and also approved first half of rewrite; McGowan remains cool, Shepard says to be happy and Goldberg says to agree with Inman (presumably hadn't read anything yet). Continued rewrite and stayed with Joan till 19th, when Andy got back. [NOTE 20031002: Believe I then moved (back) in with Ron Gibbs and Bob Nason.]
Sept.20: letter from Rose announcing that her Mom had invited her back to Hawaii till Christmas. A bit of a disturbing and unpleasant surprise...
Sept.22/3: Andy said Rose was to arrive after midnight, so I borrowed Bruno's car and went to pick her up well past 01:00 a:m. She slept till noon, when I showed her around and introduced her.
Sept.24: After lots of dramatic discussions, Rose departed for Honolulu and we were to meet in South Africa at Christmas. Needless to say I was rather depressed the next few days, more so since I had not heard any more from Bascom!
Sept.25: Talks with Shepard and Inman: OK; brief chat Goldberg: wonderful!
Sept.28/9 : "Dilip's party"; ran X-rays of my samples with Herb, 10x each.
Sept.30 Mon: Talk with Muscatine; make own drawings, Moriarty busy;
Isaacs says Bascom still in Africa, got $1M contract with the DeBeers.
Talk with friendly Goldberg, suggests usePB210 dating, expects 3 more years work.
