In addition, there was the railroad with its many bridges, famous in the past
("Chemins de Fer de l'Indochine et du Yunnan")

but badly damaged in the early 1950's during the war against France, which culminated c.q. reached its abyss, in Dien Bien Phu in May, 1954 (some 30 months before this tour)

The mere thought of a recent war was as remote as the thought of a much bigger war yet to strike this peaceful country, where the few cars and trucks I encountered helped thrash the rice which farmers spread on the road to dry and for you to violate (?); indeed, a strange custom contrary to my ingrained (pun?)habit of circumnavigating (driving around) anything on the road-deck .
